Arts Letters & Numbers’

Campus Expansion

THE INN

La Perla Restaurant & Gregory House Country Inn

We are thrilled to announce Arts Letters & Numbers’ acquisition of La Perla Restaurant and the Gregory House Country Inn in Averill Park, NY. This new chapter represents a significant milestone, allowing us to expand our reach, and deepen our commitment to nurturing creativity and community engagement. We are excited to embrace this opportunity to foster community, and expand our programming.

Food and community have always been fundamental to our mission. From our founding in 2011 until today, community meals anchor the warm, welcoming atmosphere of our workshops, artist residencies, community events and conferences in Averill Park and around the world. La Perla Restaurant and the Gregory House Country Inn, located just 1800ft (550m) from our main campus, will allow us the opportunity to further develop this aspect of our mission, expanding our capacity to bring together artists and members of the Averill Park community to engage in meaningful exchanges over shared meals.

With this vibrant expansion of our public face, we hope to offer a welcoming space for our participants, and local and regional residents alike, fulfilling our commitment to community engagement. We are excited to maintain the loyal customers who have loved La Perla for years, while welcoming new guests into the community. While we will strive to infuse fresh energy into La Perla, we will continue to honor and maintain its rich heritage developed by its previous owners, Anna Maria and Alfonso Acampora over the past 25 years.

The Country Inn will remain operational and open for members of the public to stay. In addition to its public role, the Inn will also serve as a new accommodation option for ALN residents and participants who prefer a more private setting. This will allow us to cater to the varying needs of our residents and guests by providing more diverse accommodation options, ensuring that everyone who comes to ALN finds a place to stay where they feel at home.

This acquisition enhances both our accommodation capacity and our ability to further our mission. With the development of recent programs like Craft 101—which will bring over 50 people from around the world to our campus this summer—we continue recognizing the importance of fostering cross-disciplinary interaction. At ALN, we believe that bringing together diverse groups of people from different ages and backgrounds is crucial to cross-disciplinary work. By placing La Perla at the heart of our community, we hope to create a new gathering place where such diverse individuals can coexist and connect, fostering an enriching and inclusive environment.

At ALN, we recognize the vital role that community plays in our evolution. By integrating this historic inn and restaurant into our operations, we create a new venue that invites the local community to experience and participate in the essence of ALN and lends our participants a new way to engage in the community more deeply. To this end, we look forward to the restaurant serving as a venue for performances by local and international artists and musicians.

We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and are committed to ensuring that this new chapter enhances our ability to inspire, connect, and engage with our community and beyond.

A BRIEF HISTORY

La Perla, just a short commute from Albany and Troy, NY, offers the serene countryside ambiance of Rensselaer County. Situated on the historic Gregory Inn estate in Sand Lake, west of the Berkshires, La Perla features twelve comfortable guest rooms welcoming travelers from around the world. At the heart of the historic patroon region once owned by Stephen Van Rensselaer, La Perla blends rich heritage with vibrant present-day charm.

Former owners Anna Maria and Alfonso Acampora, known for their exceptional hospitality, brought over 25 years of restaurant experience to La Perla. Hailing from Italy—Anna Maria from Sicily and Alfonso from the Amalfi Coast—they operated successful restaurants in the U.S. ("La Conca D'oro" in Catskill, NY) and Italy ("Il Giardino" in Calatafimi, Sicily). Alfonso, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of Rimini, refined his culinary skills across Europe. In November 2000, the Acamporas purchased La Perla and transformed it, redecorating all 12 rooms with unique themes and enhancing the restaurant with a new bar and firewood brick oven, offering guests both fine dining and casual "light fare" options.

Moving into this exciting new chapter, we honor the legacy of Anna Maria and Alfonso while infusing new energy into La Perla. We are excited about the future and the many ways this expansion will enhance our ability to serve our community and fulfill our mission.
