Lori Roper
Lori is a writer, teaching artist and producer, committed to using the power of the written word to instigate the reformation of social justice; especially for the marginalized and disenfranchised members of underserved communities. Lori is currently the Writer in Residence at Gallery Aferro. She is the first writer granted a studio in that art space, which is located in the heart of Newark, NJ. Lori is an award winning educator and recipient of the ING Unsung Hero Award for innovation and excellence in education. She has served as a member of the faculty at Essex County Community College. Lori’s play, The Sisters Grey , recently received a complete page to stage development and production through the August Wilson Center for African American Culture’s “New Theatre Initiative.” Lori has been a selected participant at several world-renowned conferences and residencies including the inaugural Yale Writers Conference, Ping + Chong and Company Summer Institute and Bread Loaf Writers Conference. Lori Roper’s play Hawks Tavern , which has had readings at the historical Newark Museum, Newark Symphony Hall and Vermont Studio Center, is currently in development under the direction of Marshall Jones III, the Producing Artistic Director of Crossroads Theater, a Tony award-winning theater located in New Brunswick, NJ. Her next work Tidewater , explores the complexity of misogyny in African American families.
