Bat-Ami Rivlin
When does a sofa turn into a collage of foam, fabric and wood? How many actions does it take to make an old mattress unrecognizable? I construct ‘bodies’ out of scavenged and surplus objects, home appliances and other common products. I’m interested in investigating these objects as “flesh”, exposing their inner structural configurations and fillings. In altering these materials I follow the object’s form and utility, reconfiguring its intended use into colliding functions. In their failed attempts to perform their use functionality, the objects become amalgamates of things, assemblages of fragmented utilities, unraveling in form and material as they perform their broken practical purposes.
Bat-Ami Rivlin is a sculptor and mixed media artist based in New York. Rivlin received her MFA from Columbia University (2019), and BFA form the School of Visual Arts (2016). Her work has been included in venues such as Anonymous Gallery, New York; Sharp Projects, Copenhagen, Denmark; Susan Inglett, New York; Miriam Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Public Swim, New York; New York Live Arts, New York; PS122 Gallery, New York; M 2 3, New York; Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami; and the Jewish Museum, New York. Rivlin was the subject of a solo exhibition ‘No Can Do’ at M 2 3, New York, Untitled (inflatable house, zip ties, blower) at A.I.R. Gallery, and It All Trembles, curated by Nicole Kaack, at NARS Foundation, Brooklyn, NY. She is the recipient of the A.I.R. Gallery fellowship and has been artist-in-residence at the NADA House Studio residency, NARS Foundation, SVA Sculpture & New Media Residency, and Arts Letters and Numbers Residency. Her work was featured in publications such as Artforum, Bomb Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, Flash Art, Artslant, Artnet, The Paris Review, Office Magazine, and more.
