Aparna Sarkar

Aparna Sarkar is a mixed-media artist and teacher in Brooklyn, NY. Her work deals with the meeting of the sacred and profane in the brown female body, as related to the notion of the othered body. She depicts this body as both a vessel and a barrier. She draws on Hindu mythology and queer theory to discuss hybrid identities and the potential of myth to affect reality. Aparna graduated with a BA from Pomona College, majoring in mathematics and minoring in art. She teaches in the math department at Saint Ann’s School. At Arts Letters & Numbers, Aparna will be collaborating with resident Sam Keene to create a series of painted, sculptural forms.
