Hinges Mirrors & Eclipses
Summer Workshop / Residency
07–08.2018
Averill Park, NY, United States
With every surface as potential lens and mirror, every moment as potential hinge and eclipse, every person as potential actor and audience, the geographies we are navigating contain multiple forms of experiences that at once collapse and expand the spaces between us. Hinges, Mirrors & Eclipses was grounded in the idea that spatial, poetic and material imaginations provide a unique means of registering and creating transformation: of engaging the world and making a contribution. Working from the principle that our capacity to act in the world is rooted in our capacity to recognize and comprehend transformation, the workshop covered a large arc of content, asking questions of our world, our disciplines and our humanity. The workshop was directed by David Gersten and co-taught with Arts Letters & Numbers Fellows and Visiting Artists.
Description (Hinges Mirrors & Eclipses)
In the Summer of 2018, Our 7th Summer Workshop gathered over 40 people from over 20 countries, creating and sharing works: artists, filmmakers, musicians, composers, physicists, activists, poets, mathematicians, photographers, actors, architects, sound artists, policy makers, mimes, chefs, scientists and more!
The site of the workshop was the hill behind the Mill, where we built a full-scale, projected double of the Mill using piano strings. We inhabited this giant musical Mill double for the entire workshop, even moving the tools from the shop and building with them under the canopy of trees. Within this shifted horizon of the site we searched for our Hinges Mirrors and Eclipses and built works of emotional depth and precision. The Festival entitled ‘Voices of the Mill’ brought together a wonderful diversity of works that emerged over the course of the month. We are very excited to share this film of this project.
