Artist in Residence Workshop
October 2019
Averill Park, NY, United States
It is night. You stand before your porcelain podium in the warm sconce light and peer into the eyes across from you. We are told to practice in the mirror before making speeches, giving presentations, attending interviews, going on dates. We assess our features, our expressions, our posture and adjust for confidence, intention, attractiveness? But long before we could stand self-aware at the bathroom sink, we were mirrors to one another, dependent on each other to learn how to use our bodies and express our abstract internal workings.
In many ways, Hannah is still four years old laying on her belly at her Mimi and Poppy’s house, adrift in a Persian rug sea, carried on a printer paper raft, supplies in a constant state of dwindling. It is that which can be created out of nothing that allows her to persevere. And it is the joy in creating it that allows her spirit to remain lifted. Art is an anchor thrown over the hull of the mind. Art is meditative like the thumping of a human heart in a quiet room.
