Carpentry (Remembering the First Globe Theater)

Robert Dalton Harris, Diane DeBlois, Matthew Fisher,

Matthew Hogan, Lee King

The first Globe Theater was built in London in 1599 and burned in 1613. The staging directions of Shakespeare’s plays are the principle source of evidence for the Globe’s appearance and construction. We do know that it was built of materials from the demolition of a nearby inn. Otherwise, a tradition of remembering, that has been practiced since the Greeks adopted the alphabet and feared losing their oral traditions, emphasizes theater’s role in cultural survival.

At ALN we shall model what is known of the Globe. We shall use a suite of available materials likewise salvaged to model the Globe in different ways: at two scales of one inch to one foot, and in the scale of the available materials themselves on a site above the house and barn. We shall use tools and techniques appropriate to post and beam architecture in a Dutch style: an H-frame element with stub tenons topping each post, girted together, mortised to plates, and standing on stone. The only iron will be in the tools, the only power by hand - sawing, chiseling, drilling, splitting for trunnels.

July 3-8; August 1-6

Electrical Installation

George Koletas

Partnered with professional electricians, Electrical 1o1 allows participants the opportunity to understand and explore the nature of electricity, and its effective installation in building construction. Whether you aspire to be a professional electrician or someone just curious about the trade, this program provides a unique opportunity to participate in learning about the day and work of the electrician. (2-3 weeks)

August 6 - August 22

Earthscaping

Aaron St. Onge

Earthwork 1o1 includes large-scale earth-development projects requiring the impact of both heavy machinery as well as the subtlety of planting and finnish landscaping. Through this project participants will partner with earthwork contractors to help construct the campus grounds, including earth-moving, retaining walls, and parking-lot installation requiring drainage, leveling, rock layering, and eventually paving. (2 weeks)

July 22 - August 26

Metalwork

TBA

Effective metal fabrication requires knowledge and experience developed over many years of practice. Metalwork attracts artists and artisans from many disciplines because of the craft’s unique functionality and purpose. From small projects to large-scale structures, this program will dovetail with site construction happening on the Mill Project, and is open to local artists and youth, and resident artists alike. Emphasis will be placed on personal safety, and foundational knowledge of the equipment used in metal fabrication.

July 15 - 19

Plumbing

Steve Lawrence

Plumbing 1o1 will include the study and installation of water and drainage systems in light-commercial and residential settings here on site at ALN. There is a range of jobs to be completed, with each presenting their own opportunities to understand the nature of the work. (1 week)

september 2024

Heating

Steve Lawrence

Heating 1o1 sees the study and installation of a propane system into the ALN Mill. Skill development will focus on system sizing and design, pipe-threading, equipment installation, and ventilation. This light-commercial installation affords the opportunity to participate in the unique work of a heating contractor, and learn the knowledge and skill sets necessary for the proper, safe installation of heating equipment. (1 week - Fall 2024)

Every Wednesday: July 1 - August 30

Shop Stewardship

Lee King

The shop steward is the individual chosen by the collective to manage and support the operation of the workshop. The shop steward is often depended upon to repair broken tools and equipment, to support artists and artisans in the development of their projects, and most of all to maintain an orderly space where creativity happens. These individuals are often masters of material and philosophical craft, and during this project you have the opportunity to spend a series of days throughout the summer learning from a true master.
